DHS student Michelle Han has earned national recognition in the 2016 Scholastic Art and Writing Contest. Students who receive this recognition have been identified by panels of creative professionals as the most talented young artists and writers in the nation. Nearly 320,000 works of art and writing were submitted by students in grades 7-12 this year.  She has been invited to attend an award ceremony at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, June 2.  This is the second time in DHS history that we have had a student recognized at this level.   Congratulations Michelle!  This is a piece Michelle created in Faculty Member Dorine Bosler’s Ceramics class.

Darien High School Technology and Engineering Education Department Coordinator Jeromy Nelson recently received the Connecticut Technology Education and Engineering Teacher of the Year award from the International Technology and Engineering Education Association.  Nelson attended the annual conference in Washington D.C. to receive the award.

This award is one of the highest honors given to technology and engineering education classroom teachers and is presented in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the profession and their students. This award recognizes outstanding technology and engineering teachers who will serve as models for their colleagues and who could form a leadership core to affect change in the field.

As one grateful student noted, “Mr. Nelson is the teacher that in 20-30 years you will remember as the one who changed your life.  He is devoted to the success of his students, not simply educating them but making them into positive, functioning members of society.” Another student said, “I have met few people in my life as supportive as Mr. Nelson. Each day he goes above and beyond to give his students every opportunity to be successful in exploring their interests and furthering their education.”

Congratulations Mr. Nelson and thank you for all you do!
